Chapter 10 — Science & Nature
How does lightning work?
Ice particles collide inside a storm cloud, separating positive and negative charges. When the voltage overcomes air's resistance, electricity discharges — up, down, or sideways. Thunder is the sound of air super-heated to 30,000 °C by the bolt expanding.
Follow-up questions
Why does thunder come after lightning?
Light is a million times faster than sound. Every 3 seconds of delay = about 1 km distance.
Is it safe indoors?
Yes, unless you're on a corded phone, in a bath, or touching plumbing.
