Chapter 13Legal & Rights

What are Miranda rights?

The warning US police must give before custodial interrogation: right to remain silent, anything can be used against you, right to a lawyer, right to a public defender. Failing to give it means statements are inadmissible in court — but the arrest is still valid.

Follow-up questions

Do I have to talk to police?

No. Politely say 'I'm going to remain silent and I want a lawyer.' Repeat if asked more questions.

Does silence look guilty?

It can't be used against you at trial. In practice, silence protects you far more than trying to explain.
