Chapter 17Travel & Places

How do I travel long-haul with young kids?

Book overnight flights when possible, pack twice as many snacks as you think, load tablets with offline video, and forgive yourself — nobody actually enjoys hour 8 in economy with a two-year-old. A separate carry-on of essentials survives a lost checked bag.

Follow-up questions

Do infants fly free?

Under 2 on lap: free domestic, ~10% of fare + taxes international. Book a bassinet seat on long-haul carriers — request at booking, confirm at check-in.

Should I bring a car seat?

Yes if you're renting a car or need it for the flight (safest option under age 4). CARES harness is a lighter alternative for kids 22–44 lb.

What about ear pain on descent?

Nurse, bottle, or pacifier for infants; chew gum or sip water for older kids. Bring a small pack of Frida Nose Aspirator if congested.

Are family-friendly airlines a thing?

Singapore, Emirates, and Qatar consistently rank top for family service. Budget carriers usually don't offer bassinets.
