Chapter 02 — Technology & Internet
What is ChatGPT and how do I use it well?
ChatGPT is OpenAI's conversational LLM, released in late 2022. The trick to getting useful output is treating it like a junior collaborator: give it role, audience, format, constraints, and an example. Vague prompts get vague answers; specific prompts beat clever ones.
Follow-up questions
Is ChatGPT free?
Yes — a capable free tier exists. Plus (~$20/month) unlocks higher limits, better models, image generation and longer memory.
Who owns ChatGPT?
OpenAI, a San Francisco company. Microsoft is the largest commercial investor, which is why ChatGPT-like features ship inside Copilot.
How is it different from Google?
Google retrieves pages that already exist; ChatGPT generates new text. Use Google when you need a source, ChatGPT when you need a draft or an explanation.
Can it replace Google?
For summarising and brainstorming, often. For up-to-date facts or medical/legal advice, no.
