Chapter 12Pets & Animals

Why do cats purr?

Mostly contentment, but also self-soothing when stressed, injured, or sick. The frequency (25–150 Hz) may even promote healing. A purring cat isn't automatically a happy one — context matters.

Follow-up questions

Do all cats purr?

Domestic cats and some wild ones (cheetah, bobcat) do. Big cats that roar (lion, tiger) can't purr continuously.

Why do they knead?

A leftover kitten behavior — kneading milk from mom. In adults it usually signals comfort and safety.
