Chapter 03Money & Finance

How much do I need to retire?

A common rule: 25× your annual expenses, invested. Drawing roughly 4% a year has historically lasted 30+ years. So €40k/year of expenses needs about €1M. The real lever isn't return — it's savings rate and starting early.

Follow-up questions

What is a 401(k) / pension match?

Free money from your employer if you contribute. Always contribute at least up to the match — it's an instant 50–100% return.

Roth or traditional?

Roth (post-tax) if you expect higher tax rates later or are early in your career. Traditional (pre-tax) if you're at a peak earning year and expect lower rates in retirement.

Can I retire early?

Yes, with a higher savings rate. At 50% of income saved and invested, ~17 years to financial independence; at 25%, about 32 years.
