Chapter 04Travel, Food & Lifestyle

How do I get a stain out of clothes?

Blot — don't rub. Cold water for protein stains (blood, egg, dairy), warm for oily ones. Hit it with the right pretreatment within a few hours: dish soap for grease, hydrogen peroxide for blood, white vinegar for sweat.

Follow-up questions

Red wine?

Cold water, then salt or baking soda to lift, then a stain remover. Skip the white wine myth.

What if it's already been dried?

Heat sets stains. Try a long soak in oxygen bleach (color-safe) overnight, then wash again before drying.

Coffee or tea?

Cold-water rinse from the back of the fabric, soak in a 1:1 vinegar-water solution for 30 minutes, then wash.
