Chapter 07 — Work & Career
How do I write a good cover letter?
Three short paragraphs, max one page. First: why this company specifically (mention something real, not their 'mission'). Second: two or three results from your past that map to what the job description asks for, with numbers. Third: a confident, brief close. Skip 'To Whom It May Concern' and 'I am writing to apply'.
Follow-up questions
Is a cover letter still necessary?
Optional at most tech companies, expected almost everywhere else. When unsure, write one — it can only help, especially if your resume needs context.
Should I use ChatGPT to write it?
As a first draft, fine. As the final version, no — recruiters can spot generic AI prose. Use AI for structure, then rewrite in your voice with specific details only you know.
How long should it be?
250–400 words, three to four short paragraphs. If a recruiter has to scroll, it's too long.
